Monkeypox: Who is at Risk and How to Prevent the Spread.

Monkeypox is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox belongs to  the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus which causes chickenpox.

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when double  outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies where monkeys where kept for research purpose. Though the origin of the disease remains unknown it is still called monkey pox. but rodents in Africa are beloved to to harbor the virus and infect people.

The first human case of the virus was said to have been recorded in 1970 before the 2022 outbreak.
Symptoms of monkeypox can include:

Fever, Headache, Muscle aches and backache, Swollen lymph nodes, Chills Exhaustion.

Treatment for Monkeypox.

There are no treatments for Monkeypox presently in the world, but there are two vaccines licensed by United State Food and Drug Administration which are Imvamune or Imvanex and ACAM2000.

Declaration by WHO.

On 23rd July 2023 the WHO declared Monkey Pox a public health emergency through its Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

“I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.”

The Nigerian Case.

In Nigeria presently several cases of the virus have been dictated with 36 confirmed across fifteen (15) states as at June 12th 2022 (NCDC).

Also monkeypox National Emergency Operations Center was opened in May 26th 2022 to monitor the the risk and situation of the disease.

How to Prevent Mockeypox According to CDC.

Avoid close physical contact with people who are sick.

Do not kiss, hug, or share eating utensils or cups with others.

Wash your hands often with soap and water.

Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.
